What is Lymphedema Therapy?

Lymphedema is chronic swelling and accumulation of protein-rich fluid. Primary Lymphedema is from a congenital defect in the lymphatic vessels. Secondary Lymphedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system from cancer surgery or radiation, trauma, obesity or infection.

Treatment may include lymphatic massage, wrapping, compression bandaging, or exercise specific to the individual to increase muscle & joint pumping actions.

Lymphedema Signs & Symptoms:
  • swelling of all, or part of the limbs

  • a feeling of heaviness or tightness

  • restricted range of motion

  • aching or discomfort

  • recurring infections

  • hardening and thickening of the skin (fibrosis)
